Cost of Living in Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater Compared to Seattle

Many buyers priced out of Seattle are discovering the South Sound. Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater offer more space per dollar while keeping you close to Puget Sound, trails and the I-5 corridor.

Beyond home prices, property taxes, utilities and commute time all factor into the real cost of a move. Ron walks every client through each of these before they make an offer.

Housing is usually the biggest difference. In the South Sound, the same budget often buys more square footage, a larger yard or a garage compared with Seattle and its close-in suburbs. Ask for recent sales in the exact neighborhoods you're comparing, since prices vary street by street.

Commute is the trade-off. Plan your route on I-5 at the times you'd actually travel, and look at options like Intercity Transit and Sound Transit express buses. Many buyers who work hybrid schedules find the longer drive on fewer days is worth the savings.

Don't forget the smaller monthly costs: property tax rates differ by county and city, and water, sewer and garbage are billed differently in each town. Compare insurance quotes too. Ron can pull the tax history for any home you're considering so there are no surprises.
